Spencer & Gillen

A journey through Aboriginal Australia

Wantjalli

An informant to Spencer and Gillen during fieldwork at Peake Station in 1903. 'Donkey’ is noted as being a Kararu man ‘in charge of rain place’. According to Luise Hercus Arabana woman Maudie Lennie Arabana was the daughter of Donkey Jimmy. 'Donkey Jimmy' was also known as 'Wantyali' - the name of a yarirda or powerful spell. The Wantyali song would stop rain and was regarded as very dangerous.
