Spencer & Gillen

A journey through Aboriginal Australia

Kite, Jim

Jim Kite Penangke (c.1865-c.1930) was a Lower Arrernte man from the Charlotte Waters area. According to T.G.H. Strehlow's genealogical record Jim's Arrernte name 'Erlikilyika' is derived from 'Alilkilajaka'; meaning “he slipped” or “glided away”. Gillen's first diary (1875) lists a man with a similar sounding name 'Ar-lee’kill-yicca’ and may indeed be Jim Kite. Jim traveled with Spencer and Gillen on their 1901-02 expedition and worked as an interpreter. He was later recognised as an accomplished artist.
