Sir Baldwin Spencer Papers, 1880-1929

Spencer’s journal kept on the 1901-02 Spencer and Gillen Expedition. Diaries, 1911-1913, covering brief journey to Northern Territory, 1911, and his return as ‘Special Commissioner for Aboriginals’, 1911-1912. Manuscript articles on: 'Death, Mourning and Burial Ceremonies amongst the Warramunga' and 'Social Organisation', and an Arrernte vocabulary manuscript c.1912. Correspondence between 1880-1926 and miscellaneous papers from 1889-1929. The collection also includes a number of Pencil & watercolour drawings from the Sir Walter Baldwin Spencer papers. Date of Work ca. 1880-1929 Physical Description: 4 watercolours + 15 pencil drawings ; 25.5 x 36.5 cm. or smaller Contents: Contains drawings from Sir Baldwin Spencer's expeditions to the Northern Territory. Includes sketches of outback stations (e.g. old Macumba Station), camps, Aboriginal people and ceremonies. Also contains watercolour drawings of a Great White Bat (Macroderma gigas) and Aboriginal shields from the Australian Museum. Presented to the library in 1951.
