My dear Howitt,

Many thanks for the books which came safely to hand without any damage. I cant think how the "Mitchells" got on the list as they never went - nor were they necessary for your work.

I have been out of town during the vac. & generally lazy or would & ought to have written before.

Skeats tells me that you had a very successful & good time up at Omeo.

Gregory's new b/look on Australia in Sandford's compendium has just come out - there in of course he repeats the version of Babbage settling

the point of Lake Eyre being a distinct sheet of water.

How is the Lang controversy getting on? I have done nothing & heard nothing ethnological for long.

On Sunday last I met a Mr Thornton, now of the western district, who asked to be remembered to you - he knew you in the old Burke & Wills days & is the father of Mrs Harold Grimwade my next door neighbour.
